Lynberg & Watkins attorneys Ric Ottaiano and Keith Dobyns recently obtained a unanimous defense verdict on behalf of a major public university after a nearly five week long trial in which a former high-level administrator claimed she was wrongfully terminated in retaliation for filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The trial took place in Los Angeles Superior Court, and involved testimony by more than a dozen witnesses called by the plaintiff, including many high-level university officials. After deliberating for less than 4 hours, the jury returned with a unanimous (12-0) defense verdict in favor of the university, rejecting the plaintiff’s claims that her termination was retaliatory, and instead finding that the university had relied upon legitimate reasons in making the decision to terminate her employment. This important victory adds to a long history of Lynberg & Watkins attorneys’ successful representation of clients involved in contentious, high-stakes labor and employment litigation.

A team of Lynberg & Watkins trial attorneys, including Norm Watkins, S. Frank Harrell, and Scott Danforth, recently obtained a complete defense verdict in an important Fourth Amendment case regarding the execution of a search warrant at a 20,000 square foot home in Orange County. After nearly six weeks of trial testimony, the Court granted Defendant’s Motion for Directed Verdict in its entirety, finding that Plaintiffs had failed to meet their burden of proof, and that the Defendant was entitled to qualified immunity. The case involved claims by a dozen Plaintiffs against many Defendants arising out of the execution of a search warrant where several individuals were detained during the search of the mansion. The facts of the case raised novel legal issues regarding the length and manner of detention, as well as the use of SWAT teams to assist with high-risk search warrants. This important victory adds to a long history of Lynberg & Watkins attorneys’ successful representation of law enforcement and other public entities in high-stakes litigation.
