Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is insurance you pay extra for in case someone hits you and they do not have car insurance. By Kentucky Law, insurance companies have to offer UM coverage and if you do not want it, you have to sign a form rejecting that coverage. For years insurance companies have been using the signature of one person in the home to deny benefits to all members of the household UM benefits. In 2015, the Kentucky Court of Appeals clarified that insurers have been breaking the law when they do that and have been denying benefits and not providing coverage that people paid for. In response, the insurance industry is having the legislature consider a new law (HB 191) that would allow insurance companies to get the signature of only one insured and not everyone in the house in order to keep from paying coverage they owe. Please share this and take time to call your legislators at 1-800-372-7181 to voice your opposition to this bill to keep the state of insurance law as is in Kentucky.

I try not to be jaded and one -sided when explaining to others what the corporate mentality of some insurance companies are like but these quotes from the oldest and one of the biggest insurers in the world says it better than I ever could. The key takeaways from the insurance executive when talking about the Malaysia Airlines plane that vanished. "As regrettable as it is, we expect the occasional loss," he said.!/content/1.2587234

Anyone with an injury claim can usually seek recovery for six types of harm: Past medical bills; future medical bills; lost wages; permanent impairment of earning ability; past pain and suffering; and future pain and suffering. Each of these is case specific and may or may not apply to any particular situation.

If you have an insurance claim in Kentucky and the insurance company knows or should know that liability is reasonably clear, then it has thirty days to make a fair and reasonable offer on the claim. This applies to car crashes, slips and falls, house fires and even medical malpractice claims. Most people don't know this and most insurers don't follow the law. Insurers routinely drag out and purposefully undervalue claims in hopes that claimants will take less and it can save money. If you ever have to make a claim, make sure this doesn't happen to you.

We want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. If you are traveling, allow extra time and watch out for other people who might be in a hurry. Most importantly, spend time with the people you love and remember it isn't about what comes in the wrapping paper, it is about who you give it to or who gave it to you.
