A story that may seem humorous to some actually sheds light on a very serious matter under Pennsylvania law: Drunk driving. According to Philadelphia’s NBC 10 News, a man was arrested for DUI after he allegedly smashed his vehicle into a police patrol car at a sobriety checkpoint. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on May 20, 2017, when the man drove through traffic cones, struck a detective’s car and pushed it into another law enforcement vehicle. The irony of the situation is that the police car that was damaged is a “Don’t Drink and Drive” cruiser that was recently unveiled as a reminder to not participate in this type of risky behavior. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/06/drunk-driver-crashes-patrol-car-sobriety-checkpoints-legal-dui/?hash=a265c254-28f9-40cd-a6cd-f045945c5853&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

A councilman from Lansdowne is facing severe penalties after his third conviction for DUI in the last 10 years, according to a recent article in the Delaware County Daily Times. A Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge issued 30-day house arrest sentence as a mandatory minimum under Pennsylvania law; the man also faces a 12-month driver’s license suspension and high fines at the next phase of sentencing, which continues on June 26, 2017. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/06/philadelphia-area-councilman-arrested-third-dui/?hash=613a70e8-f385-4e41-985c-472032560d9b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

You may be aware that if you're found with certain controlled substances on your person, you can be charged with drug possession under Pennsylvania law. However, under certain circumstances, the charges can be elevated to the more serious crime of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance; that offense is more commonly known as drug trafficking. There are numerous variables involved in determining how law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys will charge the separate offenses of drug possession and trafficking. Some general background information is useful, but you should also consult with an experienced Pennsylvania drug crimes attorney about your circumstances. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/06/drug-possession-versus-trafficking-distinct-crimes-pennsylvania-law/?hash=f5c1be75-260d-4f04-b08a-39618bff3c54&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

You’re probably familiar with Pennsylvania’s harsh laws for drunk driving, which can lead to jail time and hefty fines for a first-time conviction and even more severe penalties for subsequent offenses. However, not as many people know about drugged driving and the fact that the consequences of a conviction can be just as serious – or even more so because you could face charges for possession of a controlled substance. If you’ve been arrested for drugged driving in Pennsylvania, talk to an attorney about how the state’s laws may apply to your case. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/05/dui-drugged-driving-pennsylvania-law/?hash=f45c151c-0c8f-4a88-aded-46199b295078&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

One drink too many could lead to a drunk driving charge, and you’ll be facing two cases under Pennsylvania law. Driving under the influence (DUI) actually triggers separate proceedings, both of which can have severe impacts on your life and freedoms: one that affects your driving privileges and one that carries criminal consequences. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/05/dui-pennsylvania-two-cases-carry-different-penalties/?hash=a362e35e-2164-4ba9-b313-bd4d5b75a26f&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

There’s a lot more to a criminal trial than what you may see on TV or in the movies, which may focus first on the arrest of a character and then on the trial. The truth is that criminal defense attorneys are quite busy in the interim, reviewing case law, examining discovery materials, and using pretrial motions to defend the interests of their clients. Through successful pretrial motion practice, it may be possible to gain access to certain witnesses or documents – or even have criminal charges dismissed entirely because of procedural issues. Pretrial proceedings are critical in a Pennsylvania criminal case, and a skilled defense lawyer is essential to fight the charges against you. http://www.skinnerlawfirm.net/2017/04/pennsylvania-lawyers-use-motions-defend-criminal-charges/?hash=9bb5f4ed-7d43-4c9c-a432-88433b7ef705&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook
